Frances Montague, 1905-1996, chose to be known as Lady Shalimar. She is one of the earliest artists to emerge from the HAI program. She claimed to have been born at the Paris Opera House, and she died somewhat suddenly just days after her 91st birthday. She described her work as autobiographical, depicting herself in theatrical roles in the circus, opera, and ballet. In real life, she was agoraphobic, fearing the out of doors. Her only excursions were arranged by HAI to be her own exhibitions. The subject of her paintings remained very consistent through 20 years of creating art. The strength of her early work is in the meticulously worked detail of her subjects' costumes; the strength of her later work is in the richly shaded, elegant watercolors.

Madame Bovary is an early drawing in colored pencil -- rich in detail, note the stockings and gloves -- and modest in embellishment with just a blue heart-shaped tile. Peacock seen in Central Park New York, 1986 and Rajah, Indian Elephant,1989 deviate from her unusual subjects and come from perhaps her finest period, incorporating subtle use of watercolor, extensive embellishment with beads, glitter and even a straight pin.
