Cultural Events

In the past year, HAI has arranged for an audience totaling over 57,500 to attend over 900 events

Along with On-site performances, the Cultural Events Program is the oldest at HAI. A number of different components open the world of concert halls and theatres to individuals who are culturally isolated due to mental or physical disability, frailty or age, impaired immunity, illness, homelessness or substance abuse. Uniting these many components is the underlying objective to share the vast cultural resources of New York City with those who have been ‘shut out’.

“I do not think it can be emphasized enough how this type of event [an HAI dance party] helps to assuage the isolating effects of mental illness... one of our members is confined to a wheelchair. This was her first time attending an HAI event and I am sure that she will not soon forget it. This member actually stood up from her chair and danced! This is the first time I have ever seen her rise from her chair. The look of delight on her face as she swayed to the music was extremely gratifying.”
- Michael Epstein, Boulevard Clubhouse, 2004
