is pleased to welcome D. Leslie Winter to its Board of Directors.
For the past five years, Mr. Winter has been Executive Director
of the Achilles Foundation. He began his career in federal service
working for USAID as a management intern in India. In 1969, he started
two highly successful businesses in NY. After working in Washington,
D.C. for an international consulting firm, by 1976 he had joined
Plan International as a Country Director in Korea and later Brazil.
in 1980, returning to NYC to raise his children, he accepted a position
in the Mayor’s Office for Economic Development. He left his
final City position -- Assistant Commissioner for Planning in the
Division of Real Property -- in 1989. That year he became the Director
of Real Estate Programs for New York University’s Real Estate
Institute where he remained for three years.
Mr. Winter is actively
involved in seven distinct nonprofit organizations, acting as chairperson,
director and/or Board Officer. He received NY State’s Small
Business Advocate of the Year Award and the Rudi Brunner Foundation
Award for Economic Development Excellence in 1995. He has also received
awards from NYC’s Mayor’s Office and NYC City Council,
the Brooklyn Borough President and from the governments of Korea
and Brazil. He has an M.P.A. from Syracuse University’s Maxwell
School and an M.A. in psychology from the New School for Social
Research. Mr. Winter is also an investor and developer of real estate.
