This spring HAI was the recipient of two generous donations.
The City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene was contacted by
a major book publisher who wanted to donate a thousand current paperbacks
but had no idea where to begin. The right person received that call
because she immediately thought of HAI. Thirty huge boxes filled
with books arrived at HAI’s loft office on a Friday afternoon.
By the following week they had been repackaged and were brought,
on a daily basis, to nursing homes, mental health programs and temporary
housing facilities. "Many of the recipients in our program
have discussed having a book club, underscoring the need and desire
for such resources,” said New York Psychotherapy and
Counseling Center Program Administrator Monica Rosado.
One month after the book donation, a pharmaceutical
company, deaccessioning some of their corporate art, delivered fifteen
paintings to HAI’s office. These, too, have found homes in
a few facilities where they are enlivening and bringing pleasure
to residents. “It is greatly appreciated. I am sure it
will contribute to lifting the mood of many senior citizens with
profound disabilities who pass through our hallways,”
said Merry Nachemin of Brooklyn Psychiatric Centers, Inc. These
instances of genuine thoughtfulness follow other in-kind donations
that have come HAI’s way for redistribution, including tapes,
CDs, flower arrangements, and sculptures.
