Describe! Program

The Describe! Program, developed in 1988, makes live theater accessibleto blind and visually impaired individuals and has two components

Program Notes
Live Audio Description

Provided prior to the show, program notes give blind or visually impaired theatergoers the overall description of the sets, characters, costumes, and the look of the theater. They help the theatergoers create in their minds a picture they can use to achieve a better understanding of the play. Program notes can be done live or, for recurring shows (currently Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables), be prerecorded on cassettes and mailed to theatergoers in advance. During the show, a trained HAI volunteer transmits description of the physical action on stage during pauses in the dialogue. The describer uses a headset microphone while the audience members listen to the description through a receiver with a single earpiece. The volunteer describer is located in the balcony or other area with a view of the stage and the audience member can sit anywhere in the audience.
