expression
through the arts
HAI
Arts Workshops create opportunities for people to express
themselves in a variety of art forms. The Workshop Program
encourages exhibitions and performances that celebrate the
artistic endeavors of people with disabilities.
In addition to
the emotional well-being that creative expression encourages,
developing competence in artistic activities promotes self-confidence
and skills of daily living.

Exhibits
Near and Far
Denmark is the location of an art exhibit by HAI workshop
participants. Kursisten, a program for people with
developmental disabilities in the city of Arhüs, is presenting
paintings by artists from HAI Workshops at Evelyn Douglin
Center group residences for people with mental retardation
and developmental disabilities. The Gallery at HAI will exhibit
work from Kursisten's programs in the spring, 2006. This exchange
of exhibits is the brainchild of Elizabeth Marks, HAI Gallery
Director, and Birte Dal, Kursisten Manager.
Closer
to home, from September through November, Outsider
Artists of HAI are participating in the exhibit, The Urban
Outsider, at Journey Home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Robert
Bullock, Director of Coalition Ingenu, a community arts program
in Philadelphia, organized the exhibit to participate in the
citywide Philadelphia Fringe Festival.
And right
in our own neighborhood, Outsider Artists of HAI
have been invited to exhibit at the Anthroposophy Society
in New York City in January and February, 2006. The exhibit
will include work by Ray Hamilton, Mercedes Jamsion, Adeyinka
Perry, Rodney Thornblad, Laura Anne Walker and Melvin "Milky"
Way.
