Peace by Peace is a dramatic presentation developed in 1999 by HAI facilitators Tom Titone and Marianela Virella. It explores issues of youth gang, domestic and sexual violence.

A 45 minute theatrical presentation is followed by two 45 minute interactive workshops in which audience members are encouraged to explore difficult questions generated by the production. Workshop activities allow participants to examine the complexity of the issues, and to experiment with different reactions to volatile situations through role-play.

Peer educators are an important part of the Peace by Peace experience, reaching out to their peers in both performances and workshops. Peer educators are trained by HAI facilitators and professional consultants in presentation skills, theatre techniques, conflict resolution and imporatant social & health care issues..

In 2003, a video version of Peace by Peace was created which is incorporated into the live performance and follow up workshops. Peace by Peace has been featured at New York public schools, juvenile detention centers and shelters for homeless individuals.

Feedback

The youth that performed served as great role models for our residents who are at a point in their life where positive peer pressure is needed. Thank you.
-- Project Coordinator, Dept. of Juvenile Justice

Your presentation … on the negative effects of violence, racism, drugs, gangs, absentee parents, teen pregnancy, etc. in our school had a tremendous impact on our youth. Your presentation empowers students to forge forward in pursuit of their schooling, career goals, decision making, future family planning and responsibilities on a safe social level in the community where they live.-- SPARK Intervention Specialist, Taft High School."

"The follow up workshops engendered lively discussions that focused not only on violence prevention but on values clarification." -- Teacher, Flushing High School
