NELIA GIBBS / ANGELA ROGERS
ARTISTS FROM THE HAI SATURDAY ART STUDIO

JUNE 30 – SEPTEMBER 1, 2010

Opening Reception With the Artists

Wednesday, June 30
5:30 - 8:00 pm

The Gallery at HAI presents two self-taught women artists from the HAI Saturday Art Studio. Angela Rogers and Nelia Gibbs have created their own vivid worlds, populated by mysterious inhabitants. Rogers’ paintings depict a sweet, but edgy universe of carnival dwellers and semi-secret societies in jewel tones. Gibbs is using Picasso’s blue period palette, peering into rooms in which androgynous figures stand near doors or windows, which may be closed, or may be opened to reveal the sea, or sky. Curiously, both artists paint figures wearing conical hats, which might indicate the presence of a dunce, a clown or a wizard.

Gallery Hours: Noon – 6pm, Monday-Saturday

• Outsider Art SURVEY
In conjunction with International Self-Taught Art Week in NYC, during January
and February each year, The Gallery presents a juried exhibit for self-taught
artists with mental disabilities. The exhibit presents new self-taught artists whose
work may not have been seen before in a venue in the heart of Soho, NYC. In the
summer, applications are available from HAI for self-taught Outsider artists with
mental illness across North America, outsider@hainyc.org.
