Volunteers

The HAI volunteer is an invaluable part of the Cultural Events Program. For performances in concert halls, performing arts centers, museums and theaters, the volunteer is HAI's representative, serving as host to the groups attending the event, and as a liaison between HAI and venue management.

Volunteers meet appropriately scheduled groups at the theatre, concert hall, or sporting arena. Groups arrive accompanied by facility staff members who then remain with their clients. Volunteer responsibilities include distributing tickets, providing assistance during the event, and reporting back to HAI about the event.

All those who are interested in the volunteer program are asked to attend an orientation meeting where they will have the opportunity to learn about HAI and its mission as well as learning volunteer procedures and responsibilities. Following orientation, new volunteers are assigned to events with experienced volunteers. After attending several events, the volunteer is asked to take charge of a small group (10-20 people). Eventually, the volunteer may be called upon to take charge of a large event and, with the assistance of other volunteers, help several hundreds, or even thousands, of individuals with disabilities to attend a movie, play, sporting event, or even a concert in Central Park.

Inquiries should be directed to Jennifer Swaner at (212) 575-7667.
