How to Use On the Go

This resource guide has been produced as a collaboration with the New York City Department for the Aging, the Department of Cultural Affairs and HAI (Hospital Audiences, Inc). Recently, we surveyed almost one thousand venues and organizations about their admissions policies for seniors. On the Go is the result: a comprehensive guide to those policies based on the responses received.

A brief description of each organization is provided.

Each entry is listed on its own page, and includes the address, phone number and website (if available) for each listing. Some groups perform or exhibit at a venue distinct from their business address, so that location and related travel directions are provided. For other groups the venues vary; call to request information on where those activities are taking place. Standard categories that reflect the group's policies are arranged as follows:

Admission - the discounted price or range of prices for seniors and for the non-senior audience. For some venues, the admission is suggested rather than mandatory.

Senior Subscription Series Discount - the cost to subscribe to a series of events.

Senior Membership Discount - the cost to become a member, usually on an annual or seasonal basis.

Senior Rush Tickets - the terms by which discounted tickets can be purchased, usually shortly before a performance (always call to confirm).

Senior Group Rates - the conditions by which a group of seniors can participate, including the per person cost or percentage discount offered.

Free Admission - the time(s) free admission might apply. Some organizations accept less than the full admission, either as a general policy or at certain times. For these groups, you may pay what you feel is appropriate, but you must make some donation. There are some venues and organizations for which there are no admission charges at any time.

Open/Dress Rehearsals - admission to performances that are often not open to the public.

Reciprocal Membership Discounts - discounts available to members of other organizations.

Minimum Age - the age required to benefit from a venue or organization's senior admission policy.

Type of ID - the type of identification required of seniors. Many venues and organizations do not require an ID. However, we recommend that you always carry one with you.

Events Calendar - how to secure information about upcoming events.

MTA - the closest stops to the venue by public transportation.

Food Service - if food or snacks can be purchased on-site or within a few blocks of the venue.

While the format is uniform for every entry, not every category applies to every listing, and "None" is a frequent response where the venue or organization does not offer a discount. In addition, some categories simply may not apply (for example, museums do not have open or dress rehearsals) and in those instances, the response to the category is "N/A" to indicate that the category does not apply.

In the interest of saving space, we have used several abbreviations throughout the guide, including:

Ave Avenue Fl Floor
DOB Date of Birth Ste Suite
ID Identification w/e weekend
MTA Public transportation St Street

Included in this guide is a list of organizations that generally provide free admission. These have a separate section of their own since the categories regarding admission policies do not apply. There you will find contact and transportation information as well.

At the back of the guide you will find other resources for seniors in New York City that might encourage your participation in cultural events, such as information on transportation, sources of discount tickets, and services that provide access for people with special needs.

Be sure to check out the page that provides information on becoming a participant in Tickets to Go, a City funded program administered by HAI that complements On the Go by offering steeply discounted tickets to targeted performances throughout the city.

Finally, we welcome your comments. This guide is designed for you and we want to be responsive to your needs. Please complete the Comments Page at the back of the guide to offer suggestions, constructive criticism, or compliments. Copy it and send it to the address indicated there.

An important note: while this publication lists information that is accurate today, it is a good idea to always call ahead. Days and hours of operation can change, policies may change and it its best to confirm before venturing out to an event.

HAI is grateful to the New York City Department for the Aging and the Department of Cultural Affairs for selecting HAI as a collaborator on both On the Go and Tickets to Go. We hope you enjoy the show!
